Our walk for today was Route 29 from the Stuart Marshall book due mainly to the fact we were staying in Cockermouth and it was the nearest one to us!
We decided to park at the car park in rannerdale, thus avoiding a longer road walk at the end and it was a nice little road walk along to lanthwaite green to get the legs moving at the start of the day.
It was a real slog up Whiteside, the first wainwright of the day...a pretty steep ascent and we soon headed up into mist towards the summit.
From here we followed the ridge over to Hopegill head, I was quite glad of the mist at this point as I think I would've struggled with vertigo due to the steep drops down gasgale crags!
We headed down towards Coledale Hause and had a little sandwich stop by the beck before heading up to the summit of Grasmoor...it was very foggy by this point and I thought i'd lost Chris at one point, the visibility was very poor but it's a fairly straight path up to Grasmoor summit shelter ...alas no views of Crummock water for us today! So we didn't hang about and quickly bagged our fourth wainwright of the day - Wandhope!
Not much to say about this one as we couldn't see anything at all by this point and only emerged from the mist later in the day.
From there we headed down Whiteless edge and on towards Whiteless Pike, which looked fairly imposing in the mist and a lot steeper and more difficult than it actually was. It just shows you're best not to anticipate these things before you get to them...we could've easily talked ourselves out of it(if there'd been an easier way down!) but it was actually pretty easy and we were up at the summit before we knew it. The mist even cleared a bit on the way back down and we got some lovely views on the steep descent. It was the first really steep ascent of the day which made for a great 'easy on the knees" walk!
Last one of the day and we were tiring a bit but it was an easy little one, Rannerdale knotts and it was a lovely ridge walk along to the top of the craggy little summit before another steep ascent back down to the road where we were glad we parked so near to Rannerdale.
Fab days walking despite the lack of views, 6 more Wainwrights in the bag...we're nearly halfway!! ;)
