What a difference a couple of days makes! So... since we did Grange Fell, the 'beast from the east' arrived in the lakes and we were stuck on lower ground as neither of us felt equipped to be out on the higher fells in this weather. We did a couple of lower level walks including a circuit of Derwentwater which was lovely and generally enjoyed being lazy and frequenting Keswick's great pubs!
We decided we couldn't leave without doing one more wainwright which would take us up to 100! So we headed back along the slightly treacherous road to Borrowdale where we were greeted with an absolute winter wonderland(which we had nearly to ourselves!) and began the walk up to our 100th Wainwright-Castle Crag!
We couldn't have asked for a better or more memorable one for number 100...the views were astounding for such a little fell and the walk up the first part of the path was easy enough (just follow the footprints in the snow!) Once we got past the wall and over the stile onto the zig zag path up the quarry spoil heap we had to be a bit more careful as it was still a little icy, but still easy enough and those views were to die for!
Time for a few photos at the top and then we headed back down, which was incidentally way trickier than on the way up...I slid down most of the zig zag path on my bum...not the most graceful descent but it did the job and we were down onto the easy path just as it started snowing again. A great little walk and will be lovely to do in sunnier weather some time too. So that's 100 wainwrights done....only 114 more to go!!
