Hadrian's Wall Path - Day 2 (Sunday 1st May 2011) Grinsdale to Banks - 19 miles

After a pretty good night's sleep we pack up our stuff and head into Carlisle for breakfast. We have to go back on ourselves into Grinsdale first and then follow the river round all the way into Carlisle town centre. Then it's on through the park before heading over the bridge and on past Rickerby.

Passing Rickerby
Then there's more road walking before reaching Crosby-on-Eden, a lovely village where we stop off at the Stag Inn for a glass of pop in the sunshine..it would be very tempting to sit here all afternoon! The rest of the day is mostly field walking which is easy enough but a bit boring, we have a little stop in Newtown for a sandwich on the village green and a massive disappointment when we realise the Centurion Inn in Walton is just a hotel and not a pub as we had thought! Then it's yet more road walking, which is really taking it out of our feet, especially in this heat Luckily we're soon back on to fields and stop off at the snack hut at Haytongate for a restorative kit-kat and a can of coke!

Stall on the Wall!

It's a bit of a steady incline up towards Hare hill, where we see our first glimpse of the wall, just 2 days walking to get here then!! There's supposed to be a roman inscription on one side, but we must've spent 10 minutes looking for it before giving it up as a bad job! Then it's uphill all the way into Banks for our B&B for the night, Quarryside...and what a B&B it is! Elizabeth greets us with a pot of tea and homemade biscuits in the lounge and then shows us to our lovely room. They've actually just opened a campsite here too, but we're both glad we're booked into the B&B as it's so nice. Later on, Elizabeth's husband David takes us to the Belted Will Inn at Hallbankgate where they've booked us in for food, and after a fantastic (and huge!) meal, the landlord of the pub drops us off back at the B&B!! Can't beat that for service!

Chris makes a new friend at Haytongate!
