They were very friendly and waved us off on our journey, we walked back into town and have a look around the pretty Norman church before heading to the shelter and garden that marks the start of the walk.

Start of the Hadrian's Wall Path

View out towards Scotland
The first section of the walk follows the road around to Port Carlisle, it was really hot again today but with a bit of a breeze which made it a lot more pleasant to walk in. There's nice views across the estuary before heading towards Glasson through some fields and tracks alongside the line of Vallum. It's all very easy walking and pleasant enough. Once you pass through Drumburgh (where there is a tuckshop and toilets, should you need them) you carry on a long flat section of embankment alongside the road which was incredibly windy all the way along! Then it's back onto the road to Burgh-by-Sands which is a very pretty little village where we stop for a drink at the Greyhound inn, more to pass a bit of time than because we're actually tired, to be honest...we've realised that we're going to be at the campsite ridiculously early - it's been such an easy day's walking.

From here you head off road and follow the vallum line again as far as Beaumont and then alongside the river bank for a little while before heading back onto the road to Grinsdale. It's incredibly hot by this time and by the time we get to West View campsite (about a mile off the path) we are glad to get in the shade for a while! We arrive at the campsite about half past 2, the owner John shows us round and advises us to grab a shower while we can as there'll be a big group arriving soon! We do as he says and get the tent pitched up just as about 20 people show up...i'm glad he warned us! It's a nice little site with basic facilities, 1 shower and toilet but there's some nice extras...chairs provided and a little hut with info on where to eat, bus timetables etc which is really useful! We decide to get the bus into Carlisle to pass some time and are lucky enough to get a lift in with John and his wife Kate which is really nice of them, then spend the rest of the day looking round Carlisle and end up going to the cinema, which makes a change from going to the pub every night!! Then it's back to the campsite where we've tried to peg the inside of the tent together to stop the wind blowing through...it doesn't work, and the pegs continue to pop off at various points during the night!!

Hadrian's Wall Path - Day 1 (Saturday 30th April 2011) Bowness-on-Solway - Grinsdale (11 miles)
The Hadrian's Wall path runs from Wallsend to Bowness-on-Solway for 84 miles along the route of Hadrian's wall, however, because we were already in Bowness-on-Windermere we decided to do the walk west to east instead, this proved to be slightly confusing when planning our walk as most of the guide books run east to west and i was always a little concerned that i'd worked out the distances wrong! However, it all seemed to go to plan and i have to say it was much easier to find campsites along this walk than on the dales way. Saying that, we decided to do alternate nights camping/B&B's as it made the walk a lot more enjoyable! We used the trailblazer guidebook by Henry Steadman and once again it was really easy to follow and we never had need for additional maps, the path being very well signposted along the way.
Fighting fit at the start of the walk!
We had breakfast at Maia lodge and chatted to the owners about previous wall walkers they'd had stay(including one lady of 93 who had completed the walk!) - no excuses not to finish now!
