Hadrian's Wall Path - Day 3 (Monday 2nd May) Banks to Bardon Mill - 13 miles
Have an early breakfast after a fantastic night's sleep, we both just fancy cereal and toast today, all those big breakfasts get a bit much after a while! It's a shame really as i get the impression that Elizabeth would've done a fantastic brekkie! We set off walking about 9am and very soon get our first proper look at the wall, this is more like it!
We pass by various turrets and signal towers as we head up towards Birdoswald fort, it's a real shame that we've not factored in enough time to look round some of the forts and visitors centres, so i guess we'll just have to come back and do those on another trip!
Just past Birdoswald there's supposed to be another roman inscription on the wall, yet again we can't find it! We head through Gilsland and have a picnic stop at Portross Burn before more field walking and then across the train tracks to Thirlwall Castle.

Then it's onto Walltown Quarry, where we stop and use the loos and have an ice-cream before heading up to Walltown Crags. This really is a great days walking, it's a lot of up and down which is far more interesting than the previous two days walking through fields and roads and also the wall gives you something to look at, to be honest this feels like the real beginning of the walk! Even though it's hot, it's incredibly windy and exposed on this section and i wished i'd packed my gloves. There's some quite steep up and down sections at the end of the day but they're in short sharp bursts and nothing too difficult, although i am starting to feel tired and am glad when we finally reach Green Slack which at 345m is the highest point on the path!

From here it's a short walk down to the road and into Once Brewed where there's a youth hostel and a visitor centre, we carry on past them on the main road to arrive at the Twice Brewed Inn for a couple of drinks before hobbling along the road to our campsite for the night, Winshields at Bardon Mill. It's incredibly windy still and a bit of a nightmare putting up the tent, but we have a quick shower and a rest before heading back to the pub for drinks and a lovely meal. Today while being by far the best day of the walk was obviously harder than we thought because neither of us wanted to stay at the pub for the quiz and were back in the tent and fast asleep for half past eight, shattered!
