Hadrian's Wall Path - Day 6 (Thursday 5th May 2011) Wellhouse farm to Newcastle - 21 miles

So this is it, last day of the walk and we're both eager to get to Newcastle, we pack up quickly and as there's nowhere to get breakfast decide to walk to Heddon-on-the-Wall for brekkie! It's a bit of a grey day and a pretty uninspiring start to today's walk back along road up to the B6318 main road which you follow on tracks running parallel for most of the way to Heddon-on-the-Wall. We've been going for about 2 miles when we pass the Robin hood Inn and decide we definitely made the right choice going into Corbridge last night, don't think we would've made it to the pub!
No more camping, yay!!
We pass through a nature reserve which seems mainly to be home to swarms of flies before reaching the bird hide at the great northern lake. Then it's into fields again at the side of the road and finally onto the road the last little bit into Heddon-on-the-wall. We're both relieved to get here, 5 miles on an empty stomach is not fun and we quickly find the lovely Dingle Dell tea rooms where we're met with a very friendly welcome and enjoy a much needed sandwich and a can of coke! We set off refreshed down the steep hill, glad we're not coming the other way! Then it's onto the Wylam waggonway, which is a disused railway line all the way to Ryton Island, before reaching the Tyne Riverside country park. We have a drink at the Keelman pub before carrying on along the Hadrian's wall trail all the way through to Newcastle.

I have to say, it's a pretty disappointing end to a walk, it's very industrial and a bit boring to be honest! It's a tarmac path all the way, through parks and housing estates...and it looks like it might even start raining which is not good as i've gone and packed my waterproof coat in the bag on the sherpavan, oops! Luckily the rain does hold off until we arrive in Newcastle and at least the walking is easy, we knock off the miles pretty quickly until we finally catch our first glimpse of the Tyne bridge in the distance!
We reach our hotel on the Quayside at about 4 o'clock in the afternoon and decide we've had enough for the day, we'll walk the last couple of miles to Wallsend in the morning when we'll have some time to look around the fort at the end too! Until then, it's a celebratory drink, a hot bath and collapse with exhaustion for the night! Don't think either of us is up to a big night out in Newcastle tonight!

So, the next day, we're up early and ready to go, spot Chris Packham on the quayside but don't realise he's filming until we've pointed at him and made a bit of a show of ourselves, hope they've cut that scene from Springwatch! I'd like to say it was a great finish to the walk but to be honest it was a bit of an anti-climax, the last few miles are through industrial estates and the fort at the end was a bit disappointing too! What a shame, i'm glad we did the whole walk but have to say the best bits were the middle two days, from Banks to Wall, this is where you see the majority of the wall and the walking is a bit more interesting too! These bits were fab and i'd highly recommend them, it's just a shame that the end of the walk is such a let down! Still we made up for it with a night out in Newcastle and added on a few extra miles trawling round all the shops... much to Chris' annoyance!
