Dales Way - Day 2 (Sunday 24th April) Grassington to Nethergill - 19 miles

We wake up fairly early, feeling a bit achey but not too bad and as breakfast isn't until 9am, we pop over the road to the spar shop to get some sandwiches for today and as there won't be anywhere to buy them tonight, we stock up for tomorrow as well. We're staying at Nethergill farm, just past Outershaw tonight and will be wild camping at the farm which i'm not massively looking forward to but was really the only accomodation left when i booked! I've never been very keen on having to dig my own toilet but there you go, this is what comes of starting the walk on the saturday of a bank holiday weekend! We have a lovely breakfast, leave our bags ready for the Sherpavan and set off walking about 10am. Once again the weather is gorgeous and it's not long before we realise it's even hotter than yesterday!

We head up out of Grassington and over a stile onto fields heading up towards limestone scars which then levels out and we follow the path which has fantastic views of Kilnsey Crag. The path continues right and crosses above Dib Scar which is a deep limestone gully. From here you cross lots of fields before reaching Conistone Pie, the views are great and we can see Kettlewell in the distance where we're hoping for a little rest stop and a glass of pop! There are lots of stiles and gates as you cross through the fields, heading steadily down to Kettlewell where we're relieved to see the Kings Arms is open for a drink, i have to say i was awfully tempted to stay for longer, the food looked great, but we'd probably have never got going again if we had!

From here we crossed the bridge and continued on alongside the river and pretty much followed it all the way to Buckden. We had a little rest and a sandwich and i managed to get pooed on by a passing bird, it's supposed to be good luck, i might just get a lottery ticket! The heat was really getting to us both by this point and my feet are feeling very sore, yesterday's walking catching up on me i suppose. We pass through Birks wood which is very pretty and feels like an especially large park, before arriving in Buckden just about ready to collapse!
Kettlewell to Buckden

We were initially disappointed to find the Buck inn shut down, but were revived by a cream tea
at the teashop near the village green! There are toilets at the car park too which i made sure i went to, to avoid having to go in a hole later on!
There's a bit of road walking to Hubberholme and this doesn't do my sore feet any favours, everytime we pass a B&B on the way, i wish i'd booked us in there! We then head along the river below Rais wood before heading through more fields until we reached Yockenthwaite, we nearly took a wrong turn here, heading down to the road before realising what we'd done and heading back uphill across the farm and through a small gate. We eventally arrived at Deepdale farm before heading back along a lovely stretch of river where there were lots of people with picnics or camping out for the night. Then it's quite a steep climb out of Beckermonds on the road which is not what we wanted at the end of a very long day!! We finally arrived at Nethergill farm at about 6.30pm and are met with a warm welcome from fiona and chris. What's even better, because he's out lambing until late, we can use the farmhouse loo, so no digging holes for us, i am overjoyed!! We pitch our tent and inspect the blisters which are pretty bad it has to be said! Still, nothing that cutting them open, popping our feet in the stream and applying a few dozen compeeds can't sort out!! There's a camping barn with a kettle and tea/coffee making facilities that we can use, which is also available for passing walkers so we make our pot noodles for tea and sit and enjoy the tranquility, it really is a beautiful place! We're both in our sleeping bags and asleep at quarter to nine, absolutely shattered!!
